SEC West Dominates New AP Poll

SEC West Dominates New AP Poll

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- In the latest Associated Press college football poll, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) reached a new level of dominance. Four of the top five teams in the country all reside in the SEC, the first time a single conference can boast such a feat.

Mississippi State (6-0) remained the number one team in the land while Ole Miss (7-0) remains third. Alabama (6-1) jumped up to fourth in the poll, thanks to a 59-0 rout over then 21st-ranked Texas A&M, with Auburn (5-1) rounding out the top-five.

The lone team not from the SEC in the top-five is Florida State (7-0) of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Seminoles held off Notre Dame on Saturday, which dropped to seventh with the loss.

The Oregon Ducks (6-1) sit at sixth in the nation while the Irish (6-1) dropped two spots to seventh. Michigan State (6-1), Georgia (6-1), and TCU (6-1) finish out the top-10 teams.

Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Stanford all fell from the AP Top-25 Poll after week seven.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State Storm into Top 5

Ole Miss and Mississippi State Storm into Top 5

istockphoto(NEW YORK) --  The state of Mississippi has two teams in the top 3 in the latest college football AP Coaches poll.

In a week that saw 11 ranked teams lose, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are tied at number 3 after each team defeated a fellow SEC program.

While the value of the coaches poll has been significantly diminished with the inaugural college football playoff system that will choose four participants via a 13 person panel, the accomplishment is still a unique feat for the Magnolia State.

Other teams to make significant moves this week include TCU jumping from 25 to No. 9 after a victory over then-No. 4 Oklahoma, and Arizona moving from an unranked spot to No. 10 after a stunning upset against then-No. 2 Oregon.

Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin Ready for Mississippi State

Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin Ready for Mississippi State

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(STARKSVILLE, Miss.) -- No. 6 Texas A&M will take on No. 12 Mississippi State in a SEC West matchup on Saturday.Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin knows his team will face a challenge as the Bulldogs will be prepared coming off a bye week."They've had a bye week. We'll see some new stuff," Sumlin said. "Rested up, they'll be ready to go"In Sumlin's opinion, the bye week isn't the only factor: Mississippi State is coming into the game red hot."This is a team that is red hot right now," Sumlin said. "Seven straight wins. Five hundred yards a game this year."However, Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen knows that Texas A&M will present challenges for his team as well."There’s a reason they’re ranked No. 6 in the country. They’re all-around a really good football team that knows how to win and knows how to find a way to win. We’re going to have to come out and play an excellent game in every phase of the game," he said.

Mississippi State Outlasts (8) LSU

Mississippi State Outlasts (8) LSU

Football Texture/iStockphoto(BATON ROUGE, La.) -- Mississippi State jumped out to a 17-0 lead over eighth-ranked Louisiana State University (LSU), but had to hold on in the fourth quarter for a 34-29 win. It was the Bulldogs' first victory over LSU since 1999, and their first in Baton Rouge since 1991.

"I probably aged seven to 10 years in the final three minutes of the game," said Mississippi State (4-0) head coach Dan Mullen. "We are trying to build a program and I'll take it. I guess everybody can now write now I have beaten LSU and Alabama once during my career."

Quarterback Dak Prescott, a Louisiana native, controlled tempo through the first three quarters. His 56-yard touchdown run put the Bulldogs up 24-10, while his pass to Jameon Lewis made it a 21-point Bulldog lead.

Trailing 31-10 heading into the fourth quarter, LSU (3-1) stormed back to score 19 unanswered points and threaten to deny the Bulldogs an upset. Brandon Harris found Malachi Dupre for a 31-yard touchdown pass that made it a 34-22 ballgame with less than two minutes remaining. The Tigers then recovered an onside kick, setting up another Harris-Dupre connection to close the gap to five.

LSU got one last chance, holding possession in the final seconds. A last-ditch heave to the endzone was picked off by Will Redmond.

Prescott finished the game with 268 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns, adding another score on the ground.
