Athletics Designate Closer Jim Johnson for Assignment

Athletics Designate Closer Jim Johnson for Assignment

Sarah Glenn/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif.) — The Jim Johnson experiment is over in Oakland as the Athletics have designated the former All-Star for assignment.
Johnson was the team’s big offseason addition this past offseason in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.
Johnson, who was paid $10 million this season, had been one of the best closers in baseball the past two seasons. He saved 101 games from 2012-2013 in Baltimore.
This season was entirely different for the 31-year-old Johnson. In 38 games with the Athletics, Johnson was 4-2 with a 7.14 ERA and a WHIP of 2.06.
His last appearance with the team came on Wednesday when he gave up four earned runs without recording an out. His allowed eight earned runs total his last three appearances in just 2.0 innings of work.
Despite the struggles of Johnson, the Athletics are one of the best teams in all of baseball. At 63-38, they hold the best record in baseball.

Atheltics Option Tommy Milone to Triple-A

Atheltics Option Tommy Milone to Triple-A

Robert Binder/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) –The Oakland Athletics have so much starting pitching depth now after their recent blockbuster trade, they’ve optioned Tommy Milone to Triple-A Sacramento.
Milone by no means has had a poor season for the Athletics. In 16 starts for Oakland this season, Milone went 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA.
Most teams would love to have a starter with a 3.55 ERA, but the Athletics simply have no place for him in their starting rotation.
Over the weekend, the A’s went out and traded some of their top prospects to the Chicago Cubs for starting pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, both of whom have performed better thsi season.
“He was shocked,”Athletics manager Bob Melvin said when he told Milone the news.
Despite the demotion, Milone is expected to rejoin the team at some point this season.
The Athletics now have one of the best starting rotations in all of Major League Baseball, and also lead the league in runs scored.

Cubs Send Samardzija at Oakland

Cubs Send Samardzija at Oakland

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The Chicago Cubs continued to revamp their farm system while the Oakland Athletics may have cemented their spot as a World Series favorite. On Friday night, the Cubs dealt starting pitchers Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija to Oakland for a trio of prospects and a player to be named later.
Samardzija is 2-7 on the year with a 2.83 earned run average. Hammel, who pitched the Cubs to a win on Friday night, has a 2.98 ERA and a 7-5 overall record. The 29-year-old Samardzija still has one year of arbitration to go before being eligible to become a free agent. Hammel’s contract expires at the end of this season.
To complete the deal, the Athletics (53-33) gave up three of their top prospects along with a future consideration. Addison Russell, the 2012 first-round pick by Oakland, is ranked as the third best prospect in all of minor league baseball by Keith Law. Billy McKinney is hitting .241 on the year with 10 homers and 33 RBI while pitcher Dan Straily were also part of the trade.

Athletics Put Josh Reddick on DL

Athletics Put Josh Reddick on DL

Robert Binder/MLB Photos via Getty Images(MIAMI) — Outfielder Josh Reddick was placed back on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after the 27-year-old aggravated a knee injury. Reddick was injured in the fourth inning of Oakland’s 7-6 victory over Miami Saturday. He left the game and had an MRI on Sunday. “Until we get the MRI we’re not sure, but regardless it was the feeling of the training staff that he wouldn’t be available,” Athletics skipper Bob Melvin said Sunday. “He’s still sore and stiff. I think it scared him pretty good last night, but he felt better than he thought he would feel this morning.” Reddick had spent three weeks on the disabled list due to a hyperextended right knee and had just been activated on Tuesday. For the season, Reddick has played in 54 games, hitting .229 with four home runs, 24 RBIs and a .296 on-base percentage. First baseman Nate Freiman was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Reddick’s place.

A’s Have Best Record in MLB After Rolling Past Rangers

A’s Have Best Record in MLB After Rolling Past Rangers

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif.) — For the first time since May 22, Sonny Gray allowed fewer than three runs, helping the Oakland Athletics top the Texas Rangers 4-2 Wednesday and grab the best record in baseball. Gray pitched seven innings allowing six hits, two runs, two walks while striking out seven.
“I don’t think there really is a difference other than I was able to make pitches,” Gray said. “That’s probably it. People sometimes forget that baseball is a pretty hard game and there’s going to be some rough patches that you’re going to go through.

Oakland (44-28) started its scoring in the third inning when John Jaso doubled to center off Rangers starter Nick Tepesch allowing Craig Gentry to score. Jaso crossed home plate just a few batters later when Josh Donaldson slapped a single to center.

The Rangers (35-37) tied the game in the fifth when Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-run single, but the A’s answered back in the bottom of the inning scoring twice to take the lead for good.

Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save of the season.

Ramirez, Cespedes Power Teams to Victory

Ramirez, Cespedes Power Teams to Victory

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — A night of offensive outbursts in Major League Baseball were highlighted by a pair of five RBI performances from Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes and Los Angeles’ Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez belted two home runs in the Dodgers (30-27) 12-2 rout of Pittsburgh while Cespedes sparked a six-run seventh as the Athletics (34-22) knocked off the Angels 11-3.
For Ramirez, his offense started early with a single in the bottom of the first that scored Andre Either. He did the same thing in the third, giving Los Angeles a 3-0 advantage. In his next at-bat, Ramirez launched a two run shot to center that scored Yasiel Puig and gave the Dodgers an 8-1 lead. His final RBI came on a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth that brought the final score to 12-2.
All five of Cespedes’ RBI’s came in the seventh and eighth innings as Oakland had to come from behind to get the win. The Athletics entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 3-1 but Cespedes stepped to the plate with a tie score and two runners on. The outfielder tripled to right center, giving Oakland a 5-3 lead over the Angels. He added to his total with three run blast in the bottom of the eighth.
The Athletics hold the American League’s best record, leading the AL West, while the Dodgers sit six and a half games back of National League leader San Francisco.

Athletics Avoid Sweep, Top Red Sox in 10 Innings

Photos.com/Thinkstock(BOSTON) — Yoenis Cespedes hit an RBI infield single in the top of the tenth and Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox Sunday. The win allowed Oakland (19-12) to avoid the sweep and remain two games ahead of Texas for first place in the AL West. The Red Sox (15-17) had a chance to do some damage in the bottom of the tenth. Will Middlebrooks opened the inning with a base hit which ended up with him at second when A’s center fielder Coco Crisp misplayed the ball. Jackie Bradley Jr. then bunted the ball down the first base line to try and advance Middlebrooks to third, but A’s first baseman Daric Barton charged the ball and threw to third to get Middlebrooks. “He made a terrific play,” Oakland skipper Bob Melvin said. “That’s a gutsy play. That’s a play that if the runner gets over, they can win the game with a hit. A gutsy play.”
Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray pitched six innings, allowing two runs and striking out three in the win.
