Ryne Sandberg Named Phillies Manager

Photos.com/Thinkstock(PHILADELPHIA) — The Philadelphia Phillies officially named Ryne Sandberg their 52nd manager in franchise history on Sunday.

Sandberg has been serving at the interim manager since the team fired Charlie Manuel on Aug. 16.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity and I’m also excited about the potential for next year,” said Sandberg, who received three-year contract through 2016 and a club option for 2017.

The Phillies have played .500 baseball (18-16) since the Hall of Famer took over and has received much praise from the players in the clubhouse.

“In a lot of ways it’s a dream job, it’s a dream come true,” Sandberg continued.  “It’s a very exciting day for me.”

Sandberg said that he will have conversations with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. about a coaching staff for next season.
