Pirates Expect Closer Jason Grilli Back on Saturday

Pirates Expect Closer Jason Grilli Back on Saturday

Paul Spinelli/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) — With so many pitchers getting injured this season, the Pittsburgh Pirates are getting ready to welcome one back as the team is expecting closer Jason Grilli to return to the mound on Saturday.

Grilli threw a 20-pitch simulated game Wednesday and declared himself ready to go.

“I would venture a guess that Saturday would be a real strong likely case that I’ll be out there,” Grilli said, via the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

Grilli has been on the DL since April 21 with a left oblique strain.

The 37-year-old has been one of the better relievers in baseball since joining the Pirates in 2011. The 2013 season was Grilli’s first as a full-time closer and he flourished in the role as he saved 33 games and posted a 2.70 ERA.

Mark Melancon had been filling in for Grilli and has saved eight games this season.

In eight appearances this season, Grilli has saved four games for the Pirates.

Chris Davis Hits Three Home Runs as Orioles Trounce Pirates

Chris Davis Hits Three Home Runs as Orioles Trounce Pirates

Robbie Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) –  Chris Davis hit three home runs and had five RBIs as the Baltimore Orioles clobbered the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 on Tuesday night.

It was the second career three-homer game for Davis, who doubled his season total in one night. He also went deep three times on Aug. 24, 2012 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

“I felt like I just had some good pitches to hit and I rolled over everything, so I got here early today and worked on some stuff in early (batting practice),” said Davis. “It just sometimes clicks for you and today was one of those days.”

The MLB’s home run king in 2013 hit a two-run blast in the fifth inning off Francisco Liriano (0-4) that gave the Orioles a 6-1 lead. He added a solo shot in the seventh inning and a two-run shot in the ninth to break the game open.  He led the majors with 53 home runs last season.

Nelson Cruz also homered for the Orioles, while Adam Jones had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.  Miguel Gonzalez pitched six innings to earn his second victory of the season.
