New England Patriots Win Super Bowl 49

New England Patriots Win Super Bowl 49

Rob Carr/Getty Images Spor(GLENDALE, Ariz.) -- The New England Patriots have defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 to capture their fourth Super Bowl championship.

In a back-and-forth game Sunday night, the outcome came on the hands of undrafted rookie corner Malcom Butler. With less than 30 seconds to go and the Seahawks on New England’s three-yard line, Russell Wilson fired a pass to Ricardo Lockette at the goal line. Butler broke on the route and intercepted the pass, sealing the victory for the Patriots.

Tom Brady showed some struggles against the high-speed Seahawks defense by throwing a pick on the opening drive and again to Bobby Wagner late in the third quarter. The second interception appeared costly, as Wilson led a six-play touchdown drive to give Seattle a 24-14 lead. Brady would rally his team in the fourth quarter, leading two 60-plus yard touchdown drives with the game-leading score coming at 2:02, when he found Julian Edelman.

Brady would finish 37 of 50 for 328 yards and four touchdown passes, breaking Joe Montana's record for career touchdown passes in the Super Bowl, and would capture his third Super Bowl MVP.

After two weeks of headlines regarding deflated footballs, Bill Belichick and Brady cemented their eventual Hall of Fame status.

Aaron Rodgers on Stunning Loss to Seattle: ‘Will Hurt for a While’

Aaron Rodgers on Stunning Loss to Seattle: ‘Will Hurt for a While’

Tom Lynn /Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- The Green Bay Packers let one get away on Sunday in the NFC Championship game.

Green Bay had a 19-7 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the game before Russell Wilson, a huge onside kick, and Marshawn Lynch erased that deficit.

Rodgers was seeking his second Super Bowl appearance of his career, the last came in 2012 against the Steelers.

"This one's going to hurt for a while because of the close proximity to feeling that feeling when the clock hits zero when you're ahead," Rodgers said of the stunning loss.  "We gave it away."

Following Wilson's one-yard touchdown run, the Seahawks went with an onside kick that Brandon Bostwick let go through his hands to give them the ball back with 2:13 left in the game, which set up the Lynch 24-yard rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

"Just have to move on I guess," Bostwick said of not recovering the onside kick.  "I don't really know what to say."

"I just reacted and thought I'd make a play on it, but obviously I didn't," Bostwick continued.

Had it not been for Mason Crosby's fifth field goal of the game with 14 seconds left to tie things up, the Packers' season would have ended sooner.

Seattle won the coin toss in overtime and Wilson hit Jermaine Kearse with a 35-yard touchdown to end the game.

"If I played a really bad game, yeah, it'd eat at me all offseason," Packers cornerback Tramon Williams said, who was covering Kearse.  "I don't feel that I played bad at all.  I feel that I played that I played a good game."

"The guy at the end of the game made a play," Williams continued.  "You've got to give him his credibility."

Green Bay is now 3-3 in NFC Championship games.  They have five Super Bowl titles in franchise history.

Seahawks Stun Packers in OT, 28-22, Will Defend Super Bowl Title

Kevin Casey/Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- The Seattle Seahawks are headed back to defend their Super Bowl title on Feb. 1 after they came back from 19-7 down to beat the Green Bay Packers 28-22 in overtime.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a career-high four interceptions, but pulled them within five on a rushing touchdown with 2:09 left in the game.

Following the score, Seattle went with an onside kick that Chris Matthews recovered, which set up Marshawn Lynch's 24-yard rushing touchdown with 1:25 left in the game.  Wilson would hit Luke Wilson in the end zone for the two-point conversion to take a three point lead.

Mason Crosby's 48-yard field goal with 14 seconds left tied the game up before Wilson hit Jermaine Kearse with a 35-yard touchdown pass in overtime to end the game.

Lynch rushed for 157 yards in the victory to go along with the touchdown.  Wilson finished the game with 209 yards, the rushing touchdown, and game winning pass to Kearse.

The Packers offense failed to convert on offense early in the first quarter and settled for two field goals.

Aaron Rodgers finished with two picks, a touchdown, and threw for 178 yards in the loss.

Seattle has now won nine in a row at Century Link in the postseason and are the first team to repeat as conference champions since the New England Patriots ten years ago.

Seattle Preys On Philadelphia

Seattle Preys On Philadelphia

Kevin Casey/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) -- The Seattle Seahawks are peaking once again as the regular season enters its final month.

Sunday, the defending Super Bowl Champions grounded the high flying Philadelphia Eagles with a 24-14 victory.

Russell Wilson was on his game beating Philadelphia through the air and on the ground. Wilson ran for a touchdown as well as completing 22 of 37 passes for 263 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Marshawn Lynch and Doug Baldwin.

Seattle's Legion of Boom defense befuddled Mark Sanchez and the Eagles all evening. The Eagles signal caller continued his yo-yo like performance as this week he completed 10 of 20 passes for 96 yards. He also threw an interception and was sacked three times.

The Seahawks now enter a three game divisional slate to end their season.  They host a reeling 49ers team next week as part of a stretch that will likely determine the winner of the NFC West.

Seattle Stymies San Francisco

Seattle Stymies San Francisco

Steve Dykes/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO, Ca.) -- The Seattle Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers 19-3 Thursday with a dominating defensive effort.

Cornerback Richard Sherman reasserted himself as he intercepted Colin Kaepernick twice and could have had a third if not for a drop.

"The second one was pretty entertaining," Sherman said. "I was laughing the whole time because I told their sideline 'if they throw it my way, I'd end the game.'"

Quarterback Russell Wilson was efficient, completing crisp passes and methodically moving the ball against the 49ers.  He completed 15 of 22 passes for 236 yards. Wilson also completed the only touchdown of the game to running back Robert Turbin who took the ball in from 13 yards out.

The Seahawks are now 8-4 and appear to be returning to the form that led them to a championship run last season.

"These guys have really joined together and really recaptured what it was that we played with last year," said head coach Pete Carroll. "It took us some time to figure it out, but we have.

For the second straight week the Seahawks have defeated a division opponent by the score of 19-3. They beat up on the previously 9-1 Arizona Cardinals who were under the charge of new starting quarterback Drew Stanton.

"There is no question, in the last two weeks that we have elevated our game," Carroll said.

Rams Surprise Seahawks

Rams Surprise Seahawks

Scott Boehm/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) -- The St. Louis Rams pulled out all the stops to beat their division rival Seattle Seahawks with crafty special teams play in a 28-26 win on Sunday.

Stedman Bailey fooled everyone on a 90-yard fake punt return and Benny Cunningham's 75-yard kickoff return on a squibbed kick that rolled into the end zone in the second quarter put the Rams up 21-3.

The Rams would not be done though, Cunningham's 18-yard reception from kicker Johnny Hekker late in the fourth quarter extended a drive and a late fumble recovery closed the game out.

"It was great execution by them on a couple different scenarios," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. "It made a huge difference in this game."

The Seahawks have now lost back-to-back games and sit at 3-3.

"Grateful for the effort, an entire team effort," Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said.  "That's a really good football team and that's an understatement."

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

"We have a team that's full of fighters," Wilson said.  "There's nothing better than having your backs against the wall.  That's where we're at right now.  You just play 1-0 and try and focus on what you can control."

Seahawks Get Past Redskins, 27-17 on “Monday Night Football”

Seahawks Get Past Redskins, 27-17 on “Monday Night Football”

Kevin Casey/Getty Images(LANDOVER, Md.) -- Although the final score didn't fully indicate it, the Seattle Seahawks were able to easily put away the Washington Redskins, 27-17 on Monday night.

Despite the win, it was a frustrating night for Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin, who had three touchdowns called back due to penalties.

"Well, the first one I was cool with," he said. "I was like, 'OK.' Then when the second one happened, I was like, 'Wow.' And then when the third one happened I just flipped my hands down. I couldn't believe it."

Seattle had 13 penalties for 90 yards, but were still able to pull out the win.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson had a memorable night as he completed 18 of 24 passes for 201 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries and added a touchdown on the ground in the win.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins rebounded from a rough game start against the New York Giants on Sept. 25 as he threw for 283 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson also had a big game for Washington as he caught five passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.

Seattle improved to 3-1 while Washington fell to 1-4.

Seahawks Win Super Bowl Rematch in Overtime

Seahawks Win Super Bowl Rematch in Overtime

Jay Drowns/Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- Marshawn Lynch scored on a six-yard touchdown run on the first drive in overtime, giving the Seattle Seahawks a 26-20 win over Denver in a rematch of Super Bowl 48.

Lynch capped off an 80-yard drive that denied the Broncos (2-1) a comeback win over the team that beat them for the championship in February.

Peyton Manning led a furious fourth quarter rally, erasing a 14-point deficit with a game-tying touchdown pass to Jacob Tamme with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. A successful two-point conversion knotted the game at 20-20, sending the contest into overtime.

However, Seattle (2-1) ensured a win as Russell Wilson led the team down the field on the opening possession of overtime. Wilson finished the game with 258 passing yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 40 yards.

The Seahawks led 17-3 at halftime as Wilson connected with both Ricardo Lockette and Lynch on touchdown passes in the first half to take the early lead. Lynch was later tackled in the end zone for a safety, sparking the Broncos comeback.

Manning's day ended with 303 passing yards and two touchdowns but also threw a pick in the fourth quarter.
