Giants Knock Off Nationals, Headed to NLCS

Giants Knock Off Nationals, Headed to NLCS

Brandon Mangin/MLB Photos via Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- The Giants are back in the NLCS again after beating the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday night.

The Giants took the best-of-five series 3-1 and will travel to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals on Saturday night in Game 1 of the NLCS.

Joe Panik scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on Aaron Barrett's bases-loaded wild pitch and Santiago Casilla closed the door in the top of the ninth.

Ryan Vogelsong tossed 5.2 innings and gave up one run with four strikeouts, but got the no decision after Bryce Harper hit a game-tying homer run in the top of the seventh.

Hunter Strickland gave up the homer to Harper, but when Panik scored in the bottom half of the inning, he got the win in relief.

"It's been a remarkable journey. I wouldn't trade it for the world," Giants outfielder Hunter Pence said. "If it was easy, it wouldn't be as fun."

The Nationals had the best record in the National League, but will watch the rest of the playoffs from home.

"It's tender and it's bitter and all of those things, but I'm proud of them," rookie manager Matt Williams said.

Nationals Avoid Elimination, Top Giants 4-1 in Game 3 of NLDS

Nationals Avoid Elimination, Top Giants 4-1 in Game 3 of NLDS

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- Madison Bumgarner's throwing error in the seventh inning led to the Washington Nationals scoring two runs, while two more -- the last coming on a Bryce Harper solo home run in the ninth -- led the team to avoid elimination and top the San Francisco Giants 4-1 in Game 3 of their NLDS Monday.

The Giants' 10-game postseason winning streak is over, but they still lead the series 2-1.

Both Bumgarner and Doug Fister pitched brilliantly. Fister allowed four hits, walked three, while striking out three in the win. Bumgarner pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, one walk, while striking out six in the loss -- he hadn't allowed a run in 21 straight postseason innings until the seventh inning.

Wilson Ramos put down a sacrifice bunt that rolled between the mound and the first-base line. Bumgarner fielded the ball and tried to get the runner out at third, but his throw went wide of Pablo Sandoval's glove, allowing Ian Desmond and Harper to score. Asdrubal Cabrera then hit an RBI single to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead.

San Francisco attempted to rally in the ninth, but Nationals' pitcher Drew Storen settled down after that, allowing only one run to score to force a Game 4, which will take place Tuesday in San Francisco. Gio Gonzalez will take the mound for Washington and will be opposed by Ryan Vogelsong.

Giants Win Longest Game in Postseason History

Giants Win Longest Game in Postseason History

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Brandon Belt's home run in the top of the 18th inning gave the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 lead, and eventual win, in the longest postseason game in Major League Baseball history on Saturday night. The victory also gave the Giants a 2-0 series lead over the Washington Nationals as the series now shifts to San Francisco.

Washington took a third inning lead on Anthony Rendon's RBI single off Tim Hudson. That looked to be more than enough for Nationals starter Jordan Zimmerman, who pitched into the ninth inning without allowing a run. Zimmerman retired the first two batters in the top of the ninth but walked Joe Panik to put the tying run on base.

Manager Matt Williams went to his bullpen, calling on Drew Storen to close the door. Buster Posey would eventually single before Pablo Sandoval doubled in the tying run, forcing extra innings. Posey was tagged out at home on the play, preventing the Giants from taking the lead.

Both teams used a combined 17 pitchers over the next nine innings, before Belt's homer against Tanner Roark opened up the top of the 18th. Hunter Strickland picked up the save, tossing a scoreless bottom of the 18th, while Yusmeiro Petit got the win going six shutout innings in relief.

The six hour and 23 minute affair surpassed a the 2005 NLDS Game 4 contest between the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros for the longest in playoff history. Houston won that game, and swept the Braves, on a walk-off homer from Chris Burke in the bottom of the 18th inning.

Jake Peavy Helps Guide Giants to 3-2 Win over the Nats, Lead NLDS 1-0

Jake Peavy Helps Guide Giants to 3-2 Win over the Nats, Lead NLDS 1-0

Brandon Mangin/MLB Photos via Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Starting pitcher Jake Peavy has pitched like a true ace since being traded to San Francisco and he continued to do so on Friday after he helped pitch the Giants to a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals to take a 1-0 lead in the NLDS.

Peavy 5.2 innings of work and gave up just two hits, no runs, and struck out three batters.

In 20 starts for the Boston Red Sox this season, Peavy had a 4.72 ERA. In 12 regular season starts for the Giants, Peavy posted a 2.17 ERA.

RBIs by Joe Panik, Brandon Crawford, and Buster Posey were all the Giants needed on offense despite a pair of solo home runs hit by Nationals' outfielder Bryce Harper and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the 7th inning.

The Giants have won nine-straight postseason games, which is fifth longest streak in Major League Baseball history, and the most ever by a National League team.

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval also extended his postseason hitting streak to a Giants-record 12 games.

Game 2 will be played on Saturday.

Bumgarner Twirls Gem, Sends Giants into NLDS

Bumgarner Twirls Gem, Sends Giants into NLDS

Brad Mangin/MLB Photos via Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) -- Madison Bumgarner pitched a complete game shutout to help the San Francisco Giants stop the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0 in the National League Wild Card game Wednesday night.

Bumgarner continued his road dominance, winning his 12th game of the season away from home, allowing four hits and one walk, while striking out 10.

The Giants got on the board in the fourth when Brandon Crawford belted a grand slam off Pirates starter Edinson Volquez. "The last thing on my mind was probably hitting a home run," Crawford said. "I was just trying to hit something good enough to get Pablo (Sandoval) home, and I figured that would probably be good enough for Madison."

Volquez pitched five innings allowing five hits, five runs, three walks, while striking out three in the loss.

Brandon Belt knocked in three runs and got on-base four times in the win.

The Giants advance to the National League Division Series where they'll take on the Washington Nationals. Game 1 is Friday in Washington.
