Grand Slams From Posey, Bumgarner Give Giants Win

Grand Slams From Posey, Bumgarner Give Giants Win

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey launched the second grand slam of his career in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving the Giants a 4-1 lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks. One inning later, pitcher Madison Bumgarner did the same in an 8-4 win.

It was the first time in Major League Baseball history that batterymates each hit grand slams in the same game. For Bumgarner, it was his second slam of 2014 as he became the first pitcher in 48 seasons to complete that feat. Tony Cloninger hit two in one game for Atlanta, against the Giants, at Candlestick Park in 1966.

"That's pretty cool," Bumgarner said after the win. "This game is full of strange statistics. It seems like there is a first every day. It's crazy to get that many opportunities as a pitcher."

The righty went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits, while striking out five. Bumgarner (10-7) ended a three-game personal losing streak as the Giants (52-43) won five of their final nine games before the All-Star break.

Vidal Nuno (0-1) took the loss in his second start for Arizona, giving up four runs on six hits in just five innings. The Diamondbacks (40-56) have lost five of their last 13 games.

Giants Remove Sergio Romo as Team’s Closer

Giants Remove Sergio Romo as Team’s Closer

Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Seemingly overnight, San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo went from one of baseball's best closers to unusable as the team has removed him from the closer's role.

Romo has 22 saves this season, the seventh-most in all of Major League Baseball, but he's been a shell of himself as of late.

He's blown three out of his last five appearances and isn't the same pitcher the team had grown accustomed to seeing. His ERA on May 9 was 1.65, since then his ERA has been 9.00.

"Sometimes you've got to change," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle. "If you keep doing the same thing over and over, sometimes it's good for a player to back off a little bit, let him breathe and get back on track. He's done such a great job. As a group, we've hit a bump in the road. As individuals, a lot of us have and hiccups."

Bochy also told the paper that Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt will likely share closing duties for now.

Lincecum No-Hits Padres Again

Lincecum No-Hits Padres Again

Denis Poroy/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- For the second time in less than a year, Tim Lincecum has tossed a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. He shut down the Padres in leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-0 win Wednesday.

Lincecum threw 113 pitches, allowing only one walk and striking out six, as he becomes just the second pitcher in MLB history to no-hit the same team twice.

The 30-year-old Lincecum got Will Venable to ground out to second base to end the game and secure the 16th no-hitter in Giants' franchise history.

The Padres have now been no-hit three times in the last five years by the Giants. The other time came in July 2009, when Jonathan Sanchez did it.

Lincecum joins Homer Bailey, Justin Verlander and Mark Buehrle as the only active pitchers with multiple no-hitters.

Cardinals’ Taveras Homers in Debut

Cardinals’ Taveras Homers in Debut

Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) -- The highly anticipated debut of Cardinals' prospect Oscar Taveras did not disappoint the St. Louis crowd. In his second at-bat in the Major League's, Tavares homered to right for the first hit of his career as the Cardinals went on to beat San Francisco, 2-0.

"What a great day for him, one I'm sure he'll never forget, and neither will we," said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny. "For him to come up and do it in that situation, it's kind of mind-boggling."

Tavares was ranked the number two prospect in all of baseball prior to being called up on Saturday. The 21-year old was hitting .325 with seven home runs and 40 RBI's in 49 games at Triple-A Memphis.

"Everybody knows it's gone," Taveras said of his first big league hit. "That was a good swing right there. I'm so happy right now."

Michael Wacha pitched six shutout innings for the Cardinals, scattering three hits and striking out seven. There was a 51-minute rain delay in the seventh that ended Wacha's outing.

Giants Expect Starting Pitcher Matt Cain Back on Saturday

Giants Expect Starting Pitcher Matt Cain Back on Saturday

Jason O. Watson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The first place San Francisco Giants will receive a boost to their team this weekend as starting pitcher Matt Cain is expected to be back in the rotation this Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cain has been out of action since May 21, when he felt a twinge in his leg while throwing a pitch in the third inning.

The team put Cain through a bullpen issue on Wednesday, and determined he was good to go.

"He's fine, no issues there," manager Bruce Bochy told reporters.

The 29-year-old Cain was in the midst of a bounce-back season after he struggled mightily in 2013. He had arguably the worst season of his career, but was one of the team's best pitchers prior.

In eight starts this season, Cain is 1-3 with a 3.66 ERA. He is in his tenth season in the Majors, all with the Giants.
