Altidore Scores Twice in US Win

Altidore Scores Twice in US Win

Elsa/Getty Images(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) -- In their final tune-up before the World Cup, the United States Men's Soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Nigeria on Saturday. Jozy Altidore scored both goals for the US, snapping a 27-match scoreless drought.

After having not scored for his country, or his club team, since Dec. 4, Altidore buried a feed from Fabian Johnson in the 31st minute to open the scoring. The striker's last tally came against Chelsea while playing in the English Premiere League for Sunderland.

Altidore then doubled the advantage in the 68th minute, stepping back across the defense and rifling a shot past Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama. American goalkeeper Tim Howard made his 100th cap in net for the US, becoming just the 15th player in the team's history to do so.

The US Men's National Team went undefeated in their World Cup Sendoff Series, the first time since the series was started in 2002. America begins World Cup play on June 16th when they take on Ghana, the team that has eliminated them in each of the past two World Cups.

France’s Ribery Ruled Out of World Cup

France’s Ribery Ruled Out of World Cup

Xavier Laine/Getty Images(PARIS) -- France's World Cup team received a blow Friday.

Winger Franck Ribery has been ruled out for the entire tournament due to a back injury.

Ribery, who played for France in the 2006 World Cup Final, has 16 goals in 81 appearances for his country.

The 31-year-old Ribery, who also plays club football for German champions Bayern Munich, had missed France's previous two friendlies but hoped to play in the team's friendly versus Jamaica on Sunday.

"Franck had felt a lot better but his situation got much worse as we started to try and get him to take part in collective training," French coach Didier Deschamps said. "He is unable to train for a few weeks now and even less so to play."

It gets worse for France. It will be without 23-year-old midfielder Clement Grenier due to a thigh injury.

Remy Cabella and Morgan Schneiderlin will replace Ribery and Grenier.

US Soccer Defeats Turkey, 2-1, in Sendoff Series

US Soccer Defeats Turkey, 2-1, in Sendoff Series

Elsa/Getty Images(HARRISON, N.J.) -- Fabian Johnson scored his first goal in a USA uniform and Clint Dempsey added the 37th of his career as the U.S. Men's National Team defeated Turkey, 2-1 as part of their World Cup sendoff series.

It was the second straight win for the Americans as they prepare for the World Cup in Brazil in two weeks.

Johnson, one of five German-Americans for the U.S., executed a perfect give-and-go with midfielder Michael Bradley to notch his first international goal. After receiving the ball 40 yards from goal, Johnson made a run before dumping off to Bradley. As he continued the run, Bradley chipped the ball over the defense where Johnson connected from six yards out, beating Turkish keeper Onur Kivrak.

The United States made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Demspey collected a cross from Timmy Chandler and buried in the back of the net. Tim Howard made his 99th career start and surpassed Kasey Keller as the all-time leader in wins for the U.S. with his 54th victory. Brad Guzan played the second half for the USA, giving up a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

The U.S. Men's National Team will play its final World Cup tune up next week in Florida when they take on Nigeria. Group play begins on June 16 when the Americans take on Ghana, followed by Portugal and Germany.

Donovan Breaks MLS Goals Record

Donovan Breaks MLS Goals Record

Victor Decolongon/Getty Images(CARSON, Calif.) -- Just three days after being cut from the US National Team, Landon Donovan further cemented himself as America's greatest soccer player. Donovan scored twice in a Major League Soccer contest to break the all-time regular-season goals record, helping the Los Angeles Galaxy earn a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Union.

Fans greeted the Galaxy striker with signs of encouragement, ending a week in which he did not make the 23-man roster for the upcoming World Cup. Donovan entered the match tied with Jeff Cunningham at 134 career goals. In the 41st minute he scored his first goal in four games to break the record before adding another in the 81st minute.

Donovan also owns the league record for most playoff goals with 22 and even closed in on another MLS record on Sunday. The 32-year old registered an assist on Los Angeles' first goal of the game, giving him 120 for his career. Current Houston Dynamo assistant coach, Steve Ralston, owns the league mark of 135.

Cunningham, another former US national player, was originally born in Jamaica and played 14 seasons in the MLS with five different teams. He retired in 2011 while playing for FC Dallas. This is Donovan's 15th season in the MLS, playing in 307 career regular season games.

Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images(LISBON) -- Real Madrid tied the game in the 93rd minute and then scored three times in extra time to beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 Saturday, to win their 10th Champions League title.

Atletico seemed to have the game in hand leading 1-0 in the 93rd minute, but Real's Sergio Ramos headed in the tying goal to send the game into extra time.

"It's the most important goal I've ever scored," Ramos said. "We made history against a great rival."

Real then took control in the second-half of extra time. Gareth Bale scored in the eventual game-winner in the 110th minute and Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo each scored after that, to give Real its first UCL title since 2002.
