Wainwright Earns League-Leading 13th Win

Wainwright Earns League-Leading 13th Win

Eliot J. Schechter/MLB Photos via Getty Images(CHICAGO) -- Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings allowing no runs, five hits, and three walks while striking out five to earn his major league-leading 13th win in the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Wainwright (13-5) bounces back from his last start when he allowed four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"The results usually follow my delivery," said Wainwright, who lowered his ERA to 1.92. "When I control my delivery -- I told you I was gonna get things under wraps -- and get my arm in the right spot, success was following that.

"They hit some balls hard, but we played some great defense and made some pitches when we needed to."

Cubs rookie pitcher Kyle Hendricks was the tough luck loser allowing only one run, a solo homer to outfielder Matt Holliday.

The win puts the Cardinals (56-48) two games behind Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central.

Cardinals Send Struggling Starter Shelby Miller to the Bullpen

Cardinals Send Struggling Starter Shelby Miller to the Bullpen

Major League Baseball(NEW YORK) -- St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Shelby Miller is having a hard time duplicating the success he had in his rookie season, so the team has decided to move him to the bullpen so he can also get more rest during the season.

“How long that lasts, I’m not going to say [it will be through the end of] the month,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch. “We’ll see how guys look and feel. He’s ready to go [in the bullpen]. As far as how we use him, it’s how we need him.”

Miller was third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting last season when he went 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA.

The results this season have been mixed at best for the 23-year-old Miller. In 19 starts this season, he's gone 7-8 with a 4.29 ERA.

The Cardinals plan on using a four-man rotation for the time being and could potentially do so until August depending upon how the schedule plays out.

Cardinals Place Yadier Molina on 15-Day Disabled List

Thinkstock(ST. LOUIS) -- St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was put on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a torn ligament in his right thumb. The six-time All-Star is expected to undergo surgery on Friday and miss eight to 12 weeks.

Molina suffered the injury during the second inning of Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, after he slid feet-first into third base.

In 83 games this season, Molina is batting .287 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. He is a career .284 hitter with 96 homers and 576 RBIs.

To take Molina’s spot on the roster, the Cardinals recalled catcher Audry Perez from Triple-A Memphis.

Cardinals Pitcher Jaime Garcia Out the Rest of the Season

Cardinals Pitcher Jaime Garcia Out the Rest of the Season

Bob Levey/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Despite his best efforts to stay on the field this season, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Dispatch is reporting that St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jaime Garica will undergo thoracic outlet surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

Garica has been one of the Cardinals more reliable pitchers during his career, but has battled injuries the past two seasons that have limited him to just 16 starts.

He made just nine seasons last season because he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum. He finally returned this May and made seven starts this season where he went 3-1 with a 4.12 ERA

For his career, the 27-year-old Garcia has a career 3.50 era to go along with a record of 42-26.

This injury could put Garica's future with the Cardinals in jeopardy if he can't come back fully healthy next season. He's owed $9.25 million next season, but he has club options for 2016 and 2017.

Kershaw Fans 13 in Dodger Win

Kershaw Fans 13 in Dodger Win

Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Following his first career no-hitter, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw continued his month of dominance with a 13 strikeout performance as Los Angeles defeated St. Louis 6-0 on Sunday afternoon. With seven shutout innings, Kershaw extended his career-best scoreless inning streak to 28 straight.

The Dodgers (47-37) provided more than enough offense for their stellar southpaw, scoring twice in the fourth before Andre Ethier's three-run homer in the fifth made it 6-0. St. Louis (44-39) struggled to muster much, if any, contact against Kershaw; they were held to just six hits in the loss.

Kershaw (9-2) dominated from the start, never allowing a runner to reach third base. The lefty also struck out at least one batter in each of his seven frames, walking just two. His night was capped by striking out Jon Jay and Matt Carpenter to end the seventh inning. The two-time Cy Young winner finishes June with a 6-0 mark and a 0.62 earned run average.

Los Angeles also moved into a virtual tie with San Francisco (46-36) atop the NL West standings. The Dodgers have won 12 of their last 16 games and were 9.5 games out of first just three weeks ago.

Cardinals’ Taveras Homers in Debut

Cardinals’ Taveras Homers in Debut

Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) -- The highly anticipated debut of Cardinals' prospect Oscar Taveras did not disappoint the St. Louis crowd. In his second at-bat in the Major League's, Tavares homered to right for the first hit of his career as the Cardinals went on to beat San Francisco, 2-0.

"What a great day for him, one I'm sure he'll never forget, and neither will we," said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny. "For him to come up and do it in that situation, it's kind of mind-boggling."

Tavares was ranked the number two prospect in all of baseball prior to being called up on Saturday. The 21-year old was hitting .325 with seven home runs and 40 RBI's in 49 games at Triple-A Memphis.

"Everybody knows it's gone," Taveras said of his first big league hit. "That was a good swing right there. I'm so happy right now."

Michael Wacha pitched six shutout innings for the Cardinals, scattering three hits and striking out seven. There was a 51-minute rain delay in the seventh that ended Wacha's outing.

Cardinals Call up Prospect Oscar Taveras

Cardinals Call up Prospect Oscar Taveras

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) -- The St. Louis Cardinals are ready to see what outfielder Oscar Taveras can do in the big leagues as the team has called up their top prospect and will make his Major League debut Saturday against the San Francisco Giants.

Taveras has been widely regarded as one of the top minor league prospects in all of baseball.

Still just 21-years-old Taveras has hit in nearly every level of the minor leagues. In 49 games this season for Triple-A Memphis, Taveras hit .325 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs.

In six minor leauge seasons, Taveras is a career .321 hitter. The Cardinals are hoping he could help boost the team's offense, as they are just 19th in the Majors in runs scored.

"It made sense in two ways," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "One, let Matt Adams heal, and two, it's an opportunity to give Oscar some playing time and not have to worry about the balance of power and worry about who's playing and who's not."

Taveras was signed by the Cardinals back in 2008 out of the Dominican Republic.
