Rangers Send Darvish to DL

Rangers Send Darvish to DL

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(ARLINGTON, Texas) — The Texas Rangers sent starter Yu Darvish to the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation on Wednesday.

Darvish felt tightness in the elbow while playing catch Monday. The tightness did not go away on Tuesday, so Darvish skipped his bullpen session. He played catch for a little bit on Wednesday before the Rangers decided to place the three-time All Star on the DL.

Darvish has been a bright spot for a struggling Rangers team this season. The 27-year-old has thrown 144 1/3 innings, compiling a 10-7 record, 3.06 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 49 walks and 182 strikeouts.

The Rangers will recall left-hander Robbie Ross from Triple-A Round Rock to make Darvish’s start Thursday.

Lincecum No-Hits Padres Again

Lincecum No-Hits Padres Again

Denis Poroy/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) — For the second time in less than a year, Tim Lincecum has tossed a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. He shut down the Padres in leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-0 win Wednesday.

Lincecum threw 113 pitches, allowing only one walk and striking out six, as he becomes just the second pitcher in MLB history to no-hit the same team twice.

The 30-year-old Lincecum got Will Venable to ground out to second base to end the game and secure the 16th no-hitter in Giants’ franchise history.

The Padres have now been no-hit three times in the last five years by the Giants. The other time came in July 2009, when Jonathan Sanchez did it.

Lincecum joins Homer Bailey, Justin Verlander and Mark Buehrle as the only active pitchers with multiple no-hitters.

ESPN: Marlins Believe Jose Fernandez Is Done for Season

ESPN: Marlins Believe Jose Fernandez Is Done for Season

Denis Poroy/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez is expected to need season-ending elbow surgery, according to ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney.

The 21-year-old Fernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a sprained right elbow. He will head to Miami for further evaluation while he waits for the results of an MRI he had in Los Angeles Monday.

Fernandez currently leads the majors with 70 strikeouts and is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.

Despite the gaudy stats, Fernandez was lit up in his last start against San Diego. The right-hander gave up six runs in five innings before being pulled from the game.

“I think you’re always concerned when you’re talking about elbows,” Marlins skipper Mike Redmond said when asked about the young Marlin possibly needing Tommy John surgery. “That’s something we have to wait to find out. But I think we’re always concerned about that with pitchers, especially.”

The Marlins called up left-hander Dan Jennings from Triple-A New Orleans to take Fernandez’s roster spot.
