Orioles Launch Five Homers in Win over Rays

Orioles Launch Five Homers in Win over Rays

Patrick Smith/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) — Delmon Young, J.J. Hardy and Chris Young all hit home runs in consecutive at-bats in the fifth, capping off a five homer night for Baltimore. The Orioles (74-55) defeated Tampa Bay 9-1 in the first game of a three-game set with the Rays (64-67).

Baltimore had lost three games in a row, being swept by the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field over the weekend.

They rebounded with a dominant effort against rookie Jake Odrizzi. Nick Markakis and Steve Pearce went back-to-back in the third inning, starting the onslaught. All nine of Baltimore’s runs came via the long ball and came after Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead in the third.

With all the offense, Adam Jones’ brilliant centerfield play almost went overlooked. The Orioles center fielder robbed Evan Longoria of a homer in the sixth with a leaping catch at the wall. Jones then fired the ball to second base and threw out Matt Joyce.

Rays Reach .500 With Shutout Of Yankees

Rays Reach .500 With Shutout Of Yankees

Tom Szczerbowkski/Getty Images(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) — Just over two months ago, the Tampa Bay Rays sat 18 games under .500 at 24-42. Now, following a 5-0 win against the New York Yankees, the Rays are back even with a 61-61 record.

“Really proud of the boys,” manager Joe Maddon said. “It was not easy.”

Alex Cobb certainly made it look easy for the Rays who won their third straight. The righty pitched into the eighth inning, allowing just six hits in 7 1/3 innings of work with eight strikeouts. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay plated a pair of first inning runs in the first to give Cobb a lead to use.

The Rays become just the fourth team ever to get back to .500 after being 18 games under earlier. Back in 2004, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays also completed the feat, as did the 2006 Florida Marlins and 1899 Louisville Colonels.

“It started with Joe and not letting us believe that we were that team,” Cobb said. “It’s mind-boggling that we went through the stretch we did, but we’re back on track now.”

Rays’ David Price Upset with Trade Rumors

Rays’ David Price Upset with Trade Rumors

Robbie Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher David Price’s name has come up again in trade rumors with the July deadline looming, and he’s tired of seeing his name being thrown around in rumors.

“I mean, obviously I think about it,” Price told reporters on Tuesday. “That’s why I’ve been in a bad mood the last week and a half. I think about it. You guys know that. And it’s nothing I really want to talk about.”

The Rays are in the midst of a down season, and they have one of the worst records in all of Major League Baseball. The Rays likely won’t be able to re-sign their ace, which is why his name has popped up in reports as someone who could get dealt.

“I don’t have an answer for you guys. I don’t know where I’m going. I don’t know when I’m going. So there’s nothing I can really comment on,” he added.

Price is in his seventh season in the big leagues, all with the Rays. This season, Price leads the American League in strikeouts. After a rough start to the season, Price has pitched like fans are used to seeing. In 16 starts, Price is 5-7 with a 3.81 ERA.

Tampa Bay Loses 10th Straight Game

Tampa Bay Loses 10th Straight Game

Brian Blanco/Getty Images(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) — Rookie Jacob Reamulto drove in three runs in his Major League debut, helping Miami down Tampa Bay 11-6 on Thursday night. The Marlins completed a four-game sweep of the Rays who have now lost 10 consecutive games.

Tampa Bay took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when James Loney drove in David DeJesus with a sacrifice fly.

From there it was all Miami, scoring three runs in both the fourth and sixth to hold a 6-3 advantage.

Reamulto’s first career hit came in the fourth when he broke a 1-1 tie with a two-RBI single. He added a second hit in the sixth, giving the Marlins a 5-3 advantage.

The Rays fought their way back to within one run, utilizing a pair of run scoring hits from Matt Joyce and Jerry Sands in the bottom of the second. However, a Giancarlo Stanton two-run blast in the seventh helped put the game out of reach. Marcell Ozuna added a two-run homer in the ninth for the final margin.

Despite striking out eight batters without a walk, Jake Odorizzi took the loss giving up four runs in just five innings of work. Miami’s Jacob Turner got the win, tossing five and one-third innings and giving up five runs on eight hits.

Tampa Bay has lost 10 in a row with their last win coming against the Boston Red Sox on May 25, the last of a three game sweep. The Rays hold the worst record in MLB, sitting at 23-38, and are 14 games out of first place in the AL East.

“This team’s too good for that,” said Rays manager Joe Maddon. “There’s too much talent on this team to go through this particular moment. I’m really not into the blame game. We’re all culpable when it doesn’t go well. I mean that sincerely. It’s a good ballclub. These are good baseball players.”
