Jozy Altidore Out Against Germany

Jozy Altidore Out Against Germany

Michael Steele/Getty Images(SAO PAULO) -- United States forward Jozy Altidore will miss his second straight game in the World Cup with a left hamstring injury.

Altidore will be out for the final game of round one against Germany on Thursday.

"Jozy is recovering really well," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "He's doing a tremendous job. Our medical staff is on top of it. This game [against Germany] comes still too early for him, but we're working on him."

"We're getting him back in this tournament, as we said. So once this game is done -- hopefully successfully -- we'll have a good chance to have him back then in the team," he continued.

Altidore was injured during the first half of the U.S.' 2-1 victory over Ghana in their first game of the tournament.

Germany is ahead of the U.S. in Group G by goal differential.

The U.S. can still advance with a draw or a win, or with a draw between Portugal and Ghana.

Varela’s Final-Second Goal Sends Portugal to a 2-2 Draw with U.S.

Varela’s Final-Second Goal Sends Portugal to a 2-2 Draw with U.S.

Christopher Lee/Getty Images(MANAUS, Brazil) -- Portuguese midfielder Valera scored on a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo in the final minute of stoppage time, as Portugal ties the United States 2-2 on Sunday in Group G play at the World Cup.

A win would have sent the U.S. into the Knockout Stage of the tournament. Instead, America will have to beat Germany on Thursday to guarantee it advances to the Round of 16.

"We just go at it the tougher way," U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said to ESPN. "So we got to go and beat Germany, ah, get a result against Germany that's what we got to do."

In reality the U.S. played a great game. After falling behind 1-0 in the 5th minute, the Americans tied the game in the 64th minute when Jermaine Jones bent a ball around a Portuguese defender and into the net.

The game stayed tied until the 81st minute when Clint Dempsey scored off his stomach on a pass from Graham Zusi.

It looked like the Americans were going to win it, but Valera's header three seconds over the allotted stoppage time secured the tie.
