Mitt Bids on Vintage Car, Declines $10K Asking Price

Darren McCollester/Getty Images(RANDOLPH, N.H.) — Making a pit stop at a northern New Hampshire service station so that Mitt Romney could fuel up his campaign bus himself, the presidential candidate quickly found himself bidding on a vintage car he’s always wanted.
“Who had the Metropolitan?” asked Romney, spotting a photograph of the 1955 version of the AMC car, also known as a Nash Metropolitan, posted on a bulletin board at Lowe’s Service Station in Randolph.
“You want to sell it?” said Romney, admiring the car.
“Ten thousand dollars?” said the woman behind the counter, making a joke of Romney’s now-infamous $10,000 bet he offered Texas Gov. Rick Perry earlier this month during a debate.
Laughing loudly, Romney responded, “That’s way too expensive for my taste.”
Admiring other photographs, Romney quickly returned the subject to the car.
“Back to your Metropolitan,” said Romney. “Are you really selling it?”
“Haven’t thought of it, ” said the woman. “You’ll be the first one I go see.”
“I’ve got a ’62 Rambler, American, convertible, that my son gave me for my birthday, but I thought I’d love to get a Metropolitan,” said Romney, still eyeing the photograph.
