Mordovets/Getty Images(CARACAS, Venezuela) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez took aim at President Obama on Wednesday, calling him a “clown” and an “embarrassment,” and accusing the U.S. leader of turning the country into a “disaster.”

The tirade came on the heels of an interview Obama gave to the Caracas paper El Universal earlier in the week.

What set off Chávez was the president’s opinion that, “the ties between Venezuela’s government and Iran and Cuba have not served the interests of Venezuela and its people.”

Responding to Obama’s claim, Chávez said, “You want to win votes by attacking Venezuela.  Don’t be irresponsible.  You are a clown, a clown.  Leave us in peace. … Go after your votes by fulfilling that which you promised your people.”
