Joe, but he hopes his “characters are getting better.”

In a cover interview with Details, Tatum says part of the reason he chose his two recent film projects, The Vow and Dear John, was to absorb acting knowledge from co-star Rachel McAdams and director Lasse Hallstrom.

The 31-year-old Tatum tells the magazine, “I wanted to learn from Rachel on The Vow.” She plays his wife in the film.  Tatum adds, “I wanted to learn from [director] Lasse Hallstrom on Dear John. He did The Cider House Rules and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. I didn’t go to acting school, so my knowledge of story, filmmaking and character comes from just being on set doing it.”

Tatum reveals that he also wants to become more involved in producing movies.
