The American Idol judge and frontman of the Boston-based band Aerosmith screeched his way through “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the New England Patriots’ home game against the Baltimore Ravens in Foxborough, Mass.

At various times, Tyler applied his trademark screams to the song, especially when he belted out the lyrics, “And the rockets’ red glare” and, “O’er the land of the free.”  The crowd gave him a nice applause afterward, but there were many football fans and Internet critics that panned the performance.

Yahoo! Sports posted an article with the headline, “Steven Tyler’s Scarf Better Than ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ Rendition.”  Tyler wore a scarf bearing a Patriots logo with red, white and blue sequins.

The Patriots defeated the Ravens to advance to the Super Bowl and face the new NFC champs, the New York Giants.
