The New York Jets wide receiver remained on the roster Wednesday, which means Gang Green is on the hook for his 2013 salary of $7.5 million. He was already guaranteed his 2012 salary of nearly $8 million dollars.

“They signed him to a huge deal before the season started,” ESPNNewYork.com’s Rich Cimini told ESPNews. “It was five years, $45 million. They have to eat a lot of money to cut him. They would have to eat $8 million out of their own pocket plus not to have him on the team this year would have been a $12 million cap hit, which would have really restricted their ability to improve other areas on the team.”

The 27-year-old Holmes finished the 2011 campaign with 51 receptions for 654 yards and eight touchdowns. He was benched at one point during the Jets’ regular-season finale against the Miami Dolphins, with some teammates reportedly upset with his effort.
