Chara along with the Ottawa Senators’ Erik Karlsson and the Nashville Predators’ Shea Weber were all nominated for the award, which is given to the league’s top defenseman.

Chara, who won the award in 2009, had a career-high 52 points and posted a plus-33, which was top among league defenseman and tied for third best in the league.

Karlsson led all defenseman in points with 78, the most points a 21-year-old has posted in a season since Paul Coffey scored 96 for the Oilers during the 1982-83 season. He was also ninth in the league in average ice time at 25 minutes, 19 seconds.

Weber, who finished second in the voting last season, put up a career high 49 points. He led all defenseman with 10 power-play goals, and ranked fifth in average ice time at 26 minutes, 9 seconds.

The winner will be announced June 20 at the NHL awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
