Plowman/NBC(HARRISBURG, Pa.) — President Obama’s re-election campaign sought to link Mitt Romney to comments made by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus regarding the so-called “war on women,” saying that his suggestion that the media is simply echoing democratic attack lines will “only reinforce why women simply cannot trust” Romney.

Priebus, in an interview that will air this weekend on Bloomberg Televisions’ Political Capital with Al Hunt, suggested that the media was only repeating Democratic attacks and that he believes are “fiction” when they accuse Republicans of disregarding women’s health issues.

“If the Democrats said we had a war on caterpillars and every mainstream media outlet talked about the fact that Republicans have a war on caterpillars, then we’d have problems with caterpillars,” said Priebus, according to Bloomberg. “It’s a fiction.”

Obama’s Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter said in a statement that Priebus’ remarks show “how little regard Republicans, including Mitt Romney, have for women’s health.”

“We already know that Mitt Romney would ‘get rid of’ Planned Parenthood and supports the Blunt Amendment, which would give any employer the ability to deny their employees coverage for health care services like contraception because of their own personal beliefs,” said Cutter. “Does he stand with Reince Priebus—the leader of the Republican Party—when he compares the debate over vital health care services to a war on insects?”

“Women are already abandoning the Republican Party in droves because of their antiquated positions on women’s health and out-of-touch policies on the middle class,” said Cutter. “Reince Priebus’ comments today only reinforce why women simply cannot trust Mitt Romney or other leading Republicans to stand up for them.”

The Romney campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
