“The Government of Pakistan strongly condemns the US drone attack that occurred in North Waziristan [Sunday],” read a statement from the Pakistani foreign office released Monday. “Such attacks are in total contravention of international law and established norms of interstate relations. The Government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that drone attacks are violative of its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The matter will be taken up through diplomatic channels both in Islamabad and Washington”.

Pakistani parliament has agreed to new terms and conditions for its relationship with the U.S., and one of its terms was to ask the U.S. to stop drone attacks. Sunday’s strike allegedly killed two militants.

Both countries previously agreed that the drone is the only effective weapon against militants in the inaccessible safe havens in Waziristan, but a number of issues from Ray Davis to the Osama Bin Laden raid and finally the Salala incident has forced both partners apart, which has made the cooperation more and more difficult.

The recent talks in Islamabad between Amb Grossman and Pakistani top officials also failed to yield results towards a resolution.
