Rays defeat Yankees on Pena’s Walk-Off
Published at(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) — Carlos Pena hit a walk-off single off of New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, giving the Tampa Bay Rays (1-0) a 7-6 season opening victory over the Yankees (0-1).
It was only the second time in 62 attempts Rivera didn’t convert a save opportunity versus Tampa Bay.
“My fault. I felt good. I don’t make excuses,” Rivera said. “I just left the ball up.”
Rivera probably shouldn’t feel bad. Pena went 3 for 5 on the afternoon, including hitting a Grand Slam off Yankees ace CC Sabathia in the first inning.
The two teams will face off again Saturday at 7:10 PM ET.
