Rodriguez Passes Griffey on All-Time Home Run List

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1334964056927Chris Trotman/Getty Images(BOSTON) — Alex Rodriguez passed former teammate Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth place on the all-time home-run leader list, when he hit his 631st homer in the fifth inning of the New York Yankees 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Rodriguez now trails Willie Mays by 29 home runs on the all-time list.

“Obviously, Griff is special to me, because we came up together,” Rodriguez said. “He was a teammate, he was a brother, he was a mentor all in one, so it’s a special day today.”

Rodriguez’s historic shot and the Yankees win spoiled the Red Sox 100th anniversary celebration of Fenway Park.
