Before plotting to bomb the New York subway system, prosecutors said Adis Medunjanin and two high school classmates considered attacking the New York Stock Exchange, movie theaters or Times Square.

Defense attorney Robert Gottlieb said the government is using “inflammatory rhetoric” and said “we’re going to make it very clear the government is wrong — he’s not a terrorist, he’s not guilty.”

Gottlieb says his client went to Pakistan in 2008 to train to fight in Afghanistan, not to become an al-Qaeda suicide bomber.

Medunjanin’s co-defendants, including ringleader Najibullah Zazi, pleaded guilty and are now cooperating.
