Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Stocks ended the day mixed after buyers Monday waited to pounce on some stocks that were beaten down by last week’s slide.

The Dow on Monday managed a gain of 72 points to close at 12,921. The Nasdaq closed with a 23-point loss, while the S&P closed off just a fraction.

Financial stocks led Monday’s surge. Citigroup reported quarterly profit of just under $3 billion, which was short of many estimates.  Still, the bank said more customers are repaying their loans on time.
