Magic Fire Stan Van Gundy, General Manager Otis Smith Out As Well
Published at(ORLANDO) — The Orlando Magic fired head coach Stan Van Gundy Monday. The team also announced that they have mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Otis Smith.
During his five seasons at the helm in Orlando, Van Gundy posted a record of 259-135. He led the Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.
“It’s time for a new leadership and a new approach,” Magic CEO Alex Martins said at a news conference Monday. “We simply came to the decision that we were not on the right track.”
Van Gundy’s relationship with center Dwight Howard became fractured during the season when the six-time All-Star reportedly wanted him fired. Howard has denied those accusations.
