Evidence of what kind of impact the president’s declaration had was evident immediately afterwards, with BuzzFeed reporting $1 million in donations within 90 minutes.

The campaign itself wouldn’t verify this report.

Obama’s email describes his evolving opinion on the issue, noting that he “was reluctant to use the term marriage because of the very powerful traditions it evokes.”

However, after ending the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and having spoken to people in same-sex relationships, the president realized “for loving, same-sex couples, the denial of marriage equality means that, in their eyes and the eyes of their children, they are still considered less than full citizens.”

It’s because of this that Obama now believes that same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry and “where states enact same-sex marriage, no federal act should invalidate them.”

The president also mentioned how he respects “the beliefs of others, and the right of religious institutions to act in accordance with their own doctrines.”

Meanwhile, just underneath his signature in the email, Obama makes his formal fundraising pitch by saying, “More than 1.9 million people like you power this campaign.  If you can, please donate today.”
