Hurricane Bud, the first hurricane and second named storm of the season, is taking aim at Mexico while an area of low pressure develops off the east coast, threatening areas of Florida and the Carolinas with torrential rain.

The system has already dumped ten inches of rain in one 24-hour period, according to ABC’s Weather Editor Sam Champion.

The hurricane season has come early this year ahead of its official June 1 start date. The first named storm was Tropical Storm Alberto, which churned up the waters off the coast of South Carolina. Two named storms have not developed this early in more than 100 years.

The east coast system is expected to cause heavy rain, high surf, and rip currents along coastal areas where many will be vacationing for the long Memorial Day weekend. Hurricane Bud will bring messy and potentially dangerous weather to areas south of Puerta Vallerta, Mexico.

Hot weather will spread from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic this weekend. In Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, and Indianapolis temperatures will soar into the 90s and near 100 degrees.

Sunday’s Indy 500 could be the hottest on record with a forecast high of 96 degrees in Indianapolis. It would also be one of the highest recorded temperatures in May for the city.

Meanwhile, continued dry weather and high winds in the west will complicate efforts for firefighters battling the wildfires in Arizona, California, and New Mexico.
