In the photo, a woman is shown lying in bed allegedly just minutes after undergoing a forced abortion; with her is the lifeless body of her unborn baby.

In an interview with ABC News, Feng Jianmei’s husband, Deng, says authorities with the National Population and Family Planning Commission forced his wife to have the procedure. He says she was seven months pregnant at the time.

Because the couple already has a 6-year-old daughter, authorities told them they were in violation of China’s one-child policy.

“This is murder,” writes one Chinese web user. “Where is the humanity?”

An article in the state-run newspaper The Global Times criticized the government for allowing a late term abortion, but stopped short of calling for an end to the one-child policy — instituted in 1978 as an effort to curb population growth.

The U.S. has long opposed China’s birth policies. This week the State Department called on China to spare another woman who is facing the same fate as Feng.
