The identity of the 16-year-old shooter was not released, and a 17-year-old friend of his who was believed to be with him at the time has been referred to the Fond Du Lac District Attorney for a review.

“They basically said that they shot an arrow at a squirrel and the arrow impacted the child and at that point they heard the child scream and obviously they were afraid to come forward,” Fond Du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink told ABC affiliate WBAY.

Aryanna Schneeberg was walking with friends nearly two weeks ago when she was hit from behind by what police at the time said they believed was a stray arrow.

The arrow had a target tip on it rather than a more destructive hunting tip, Fink said told ABC News, “which is a good thing otherwise it could have been a fatal impact.”

Michele Schneeberg, the girl’s grandmother, told the station she was baffled by the behavior of the two boys who “turned on their heels and ran” and said she would ask them: “What were you thinking?”

“It was very scary. She was in real bad shape,” she said of the moments after Aryanna was hit.

Schneeberg said the girl can’t lift heavy items or enjoy one of her favorite pastimes, jumping on the trampoline, but she seems to be recovering.
