But by Monday, Kabul and Islamabad were again trading charges after Afghan officials reported that over 300 artillery shells and rockets were fired from Pakistan into eastern Afghanistan last weekend.  At least four people died in the barrage, according to local Afghan officials.

It was basically a repeat of last month’s shelling in eastern Kunar province that forced thousands to flee their homes.  Pakistan said that attack was in retaliation for Afghanistan protecting militants who allegedly killed their soldiers.

The Afghan government has since issued a statement saying that “Any continuation of such reported shelling against Afghan villages could have a significant negative impact on bilateral relations.”

Pakistan answered that the Afghans were wrong and that any military action is in response to its soldiers being attacked or threatened.

Each side has blamed the other for instigating cross-border attacks that the coalition sees as detrimental to the cause of peace as it tries to disengage from the ongoing war with the Taliban.
