(INDIANAPOLIS) — Tony Stewart is preparing for the upcoming Brickyard 400 race with a little extra motivation. The race will take place this Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is Stewart’s hometown as part of the Sprint Cup Chase.
“Obviously being an Indiana kid it’s a big race for me personally,” the defending Sprint Cup champion told ABC Sports Radio on Tuesday. “It seems like whoever wins the Brickyard has a lot of momentum going into the chase.”
The 13-year NASCAR veteran currently sits in seventh place in the Sprint Cup standings. He has 618 points, 89 behind points leader Matt Kenseth. So far, Stewart has posted three wins and eight top-5 finishes, but finished in 12th place in the New Hampshire race, which took place July 15.
