Wolfeboro Abuzz Over Romney, Fourth of July Parade

Darren McCollester/Getty Images(WOLFEBORO, N.H.) — Mitt Romney and his family will march on Wednesday in the Wolfeboro Fourth of July Parade and possible running mate Sen. Kelly Ayotte and her family are expected to join him along the route.
The parade, set to begin at 10 a.m., will go right through Main Street of the town known as “The Oldest Summer Resort in America.” Romney is expected to give brief remarks at the end of the parade route. This is the first public campaign event for Romney since last Thursday when he gave his statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare.
The parade is the topic of conversation everywhere from the docks to the restaurants to the long line for the famous Bailey’s Bubbles ice cream stand. On Main Street Tuesday, residents were bragging to one another about their place in the parade, making sure everyone knew they’d be marching in the same parade as Mitt Romney. Hotel receptionists were greeting newcomers with the anxious question: “Are you here for the Romneys?”
Romney’s vacation has so far been non-stop. A glimpse into his backyard Tuesday found grandkids bouncing on a massive netted trampoline while others ran on the beach that is spread out with lawn chairs for the adults. Romney was spotted playing volleyball with his five sons later in the afternoon, running around in a navy t-shirt and light-colored shorts. Matt Romney could be seen diving for a ball at one point, while Mitt’s serve appeared to be quite strong. Two of the Romney granddaughters took the red jet ski for a whirl on Lake Winnipesaukee as well. The family was not spotted Tuesday in downtown Wolfeboro, where many of the homes here have Romney for President placards planted in their front lawns or hung off their docks.
Both Mitt and Ann Romney tweeted Tuesday about how great the family time is, Romney calling it “much-needed” and Ann tweeting a sweet photo of her and her grandkids eating ice cream.
As reporters here clamor for a potential vice president sighting, ABC News’ Michael Falcone reported that two of the men presumed to be on the VP shortlist, Gov. Bobby Jindal and Tim Pawlenty, will spend Thursday and Friday bracketing Obama’s bus tour in Pennsylvania and Ohio, which will make showing up for a meeting with Romney in N.H. impossible.
