In the final individual race of his career, Phelps beat out South Africa’s Chad le Clos by two tenths of a second to win the gold medal.  Phelps touched in 51.21 seconds to beat Clos, the guy who edged him in the 200 fly.  Clos touched in 51.44, tying for silver with Russia’s Evgeny Korotyshkin.

Phelps has 21 medals overall to his name.

“I’m just happy that the last one was a win,” Phelps said. “That’s all I really wanted coming into the night.”

The final race of his career is the 4X100 medley relay on Saturday night.  This is a race in which the Americans have never lost.

Phelps plans to retire following this year’s games.
