Missy Franklin Sets World Record In 200 Backstroke

Getty S 080312 Missy%20Franklin?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1344034470416Ezra Shaw/Getty Images(LONDON) —  Missy Franklin won her third gold medal and fourth overall at the London Olympics on Friday when she set a world record in the 200 backstroke competition.

Franklin finished in 2 minutes, 4.06 seconds which was 0.75 quicker than the mark set by Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe at the 2009 world championships in Rome.

 Russia’s Anastasia Zueva won the silver medal for finishing in 2:05:92.  Another American, Elizabeth Beisel, won the bronze medal for finishing in 2:06.55.  Coventry finished sixth.

“I could never dream for it to happen like that,” said Franklin, who also has a bronze in her first Olympics.

She has one more race to go, which is the 4×100 medley relay.

Franklin’s record was the seventh world record set in this years Games.
