Lochte was asked about 18-time gold medalist, Michael Phelps, whom he has competed with for as long as he has been in the Olympic Games.

“I’ve been swimming against Michael for eight years now, the rivalry that we’ve created, I want to say one of the best ever in the sport of swimming,” Lochte told the Mike & Mike ESPN Radio Show Tuesday.  “We don’t let swimming define who we are.”

Come 2016, Lochte may have the pool all to himself since Phelps has said that the London Games were his last.

“Just everything that he’s done in the sport, I think he’s over it, I think he just wants a normal life outside of swimming,” Lochte said when asked about if he thinks Phelps will change his mind.  “I hope he comes back just because I love racing against him. He’s the toughest racer I’ve ever had to go up against, I love a challenge.”

Lochte has already set goals for himself come the Rio Games in 2016.
