McCarthy has walked a few steps recently, which is considered tremendous progress. Last week while facing the Los Angeles Angels, shortstop Erik Aybar hit a 91-mph pitch that struck McCarthy in the head. The 29-year-old suffered an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture.

“I think that we’re a little more comfortable with where he is and how he’s doing, absolutley,” A’s trainer Nick Paparesta said on Monday.

“The neurologist was very happy with the results of his examination today,” Paparesta added when asked when McCarthy would be able to return home. “We’re not ready to give you an exact date yet, but I think it’s short. I think it’s soon.”

McCarthy was the Atheltics opening day starter, and one of their more consistent pitchers. He went 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA in 18 games started.

Pitcher Dan Straily is expected to permanently replace McCarthy in the rotation this season.
