That’s what the National Pig Association, a British-based industry trade group, predicted on Monday, saying “a world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable.”

The NPA says that while herds across Europe are declining because of drought conditions that are affecting this year’s corn and soybean crop, the problem will actually spread across the world.

It doesn’t seem that such a scenario is likely in the U.S. since pork supplies in warehouses soared to record levels in August, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.  But that might be the calm before the storm since farmers are scaling back their herds because the costs of feeding pigs has gotten more expensive due to the brutally dry summer.
