Howard suffered the injury when he dropped a heavy iron one-deck bat on his foot on Thursday night. X-Rays revelaed a crack, and Howard’s injury plauged 2012 season is finished.

“Chase [Utley] had just hit the ball and I let the pipe go and it landed flush on my foot,” Howard said. “It hurt.”

The slugger didn’t join the team until July as he was still recovering from a torn Achilles injury he suffered in the playoffs last October. In 71 games played, Howard batted .219 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs. Those are all career lows since his rookie season back in 2005.

The 32-year old Howard just finished the first year of a five-year contract extension worth $125 million.
