Vick was incarcerated for 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges. He was released from prison in 2009, and that summer he wound up signing with the Eagles.

Since his release, Vick has been a staple in the Philadelphia community. He has worked with The Humane Society of the United States to speak out against animal cruelty. Vick has also made numerous appearances at local schools to speak to students about the dangers of dogfighting and being involved with dogfighting.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” Vick said in a statement. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship wit animals. I want to ensure my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family.”

Vick was banned from owning a dog until his probation period had been completed. The Humane Socity declined to comment on Vick’s ownership of a dog.
