Wright has $16-million due next season, his final of the six-year $55-million contract he signed in 2006.  Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is hoping to sign both Wright and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey this offseason.

“What I intend to be, in any conversation that relates to the future of the Mets overall, is as honest as I can possibly be,” Alderson said on the final day of the regular season last month in regards to what his pitch to Wright would be.  “My message would be, ‘Look, I think we’re very definitely headed in the right direction. But at the same time, we will not in the near future have unlimited funds.'”

Nationals’ third baseman, Ryan Zimmerman earned a six-year, $100-million deal from the Nationals earlier this season and Wright is expected to make more.  Alderson believes it does come down to winning, but may also remind Wright about playing his entire career with one club and how he can go down as one of the greatest Mets of all-time.

“I also think that there are factors that relate to New York that go beyond winning,” Alderson said. “That’s clearly the most important thing for any of us. But I think there are some other important factors, too, that don’t relate to salary or money that may have an impact. I’ll try to be as honest in that regard as well.”

Wright played 156 games in 2012 and batted .306 with 21 home runs and 93 RBI’s.
