The network has cancelled its freshman series Animal Practice, which stars Justin Kirk, JoAnna Garcia Swisher and a monkey named Crystal.  The animal vet comedy was introduced during NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics’ closing ceremony in August.

The Whitney Cummings sitcom Whitney will replace Animal Practice beginning Nov. 14.  It was originally supposed to return Friday night, but the network recently postponed its premiere date.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals celebrated the cancellation on its website, writing, “By not tuning in, viewers told NBC that they weren’t interested in watching animals dressed up and made to perform cheap tricks — animals who had been torn away from their mothers as babies and subjected to cruel training methods and unnatural living conditions.”

Animal Practice is the second show to be cancelled this fall, following CBS’ Made in Jersey.
