Since the hurricane struck Monday the president has suspended personal appearances at campaign activities to monitor the response to Hurricane Sandy.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney appeared in Ohio on Tuesday and encouraged supporters to donate to the hurricane relief effort.

Christie has been effusive in his praise of Obama’s handling of the storm. The two spoke on the phone at midnight, according to Christie during an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Obama made major disaster declarations for New York and New Jersey overnight. He has signed emergency declarations for several other states along the eastern seaboard from Virginia to Massachusetts.
