Werth’s Walk-Off Pushes Nationals Past Cardinals

Rob Carr/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — Jason Werth stayed alive for 12 pitches, and on the 13th, he kept the Washington Nationals alive. Werth hit a walk-off home run off Lance Lynn in the bottom-of-the-ninth, giving the Nat’s a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, tying the best-of-five NLDS at two.
“This is what it’s all about,” Werth said. “This is what you play all season for. This is why you work out all winter. This is why you start playing tee-ball when you’re 4.”
Washington took a one run lead in the second inning when first baseman Adam LaRoche smacked a solo home run of Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse, but the Cardinals answered in third, when Carlos Beltran hit a sacrifice fly. That concluded the scoring until Werth’s late-inning slam.
Ross Detwiler pitched six-innings allowing one unearned run and striking out two for Washington.
The series deciding Game 5 will take place Friday night in Washington. First pitch is scheduled for approximately 8:37 p.m. eastern.
