Out of fear that the airports will run out of fuel, several airlines including Southwest and US Airways are loading extra jet fuel onboard New York-bound planes so they can take off again — even if no fuel is available in the area.

It’s an unusual move, and costly because it adds extra weight to planes (extra weight means more fuel burned).

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey says it has an adequate supply of jet fuel.
