Nicki Minaj Won’t Talk About Mariah, Won’t Choose Sides in Election

Brad Barket/PictureGroup(NEW YORK) — Nicki Minaj will be peeling back the layers for Nicki Minaj: My Truth, her trio of E! specials that kick off Sunday at 10:30 p.m ET. Over the course of the shows, Nicki takes viewers inside her world and shows them private aspects of her work and her love life, and even opens up about her future on American Idol.
In an interview with USA Today, Nicki explains, “I’m not trying to have a facade. I’m showing exactly what goes on in my life. I think people will be surprised at seeing that.” Nicki’s best guess is that people will be surprised by her honesty, but also inspired. Nicki says the reality series is “inspirational for women who feel like they want to push more and get more done.”
Nicki admits, though, that doing the series was a challenge. “I’m such a private person, it was a bit hard. When I’m around my circle, I just kind of loosen up,” she says. But by the end of the first episode, Nicki says she “didn’t care the cameras were on.”
When USA Today asked Nicki about her so-called feud with her fellow American Idol judge Mariah Carey, the interview was interrupted by her rep, who said, “Next question, please.” However, in a preview of the special, Nicki is seen saying, presumably in regards to Idol, “Ain’t nobody gonna run me off that mother-f***ing show.”
As for another face-off between two powerful individuals — the presidential election on Tuesday — Nicki refuses to take sides. Though she’s previously rapped pro-Mitt Romney lyrics and afterward exchanged tweets with President Obama, Nicki tells USA Today that she’d “rather not say” who she’s voting for.
“I want my fans to research people and policy, not research their skin color, and think of this election in a broader way,” she says, adding, “I’m not a fan of ridiculing people for who they’re voting. I’m a fan of being open-minded and everyone voting for whoever they want to vote for.”
