ESPN.com is reporting that the Rangers are only willing to offer Hamilton a three-year deal.

The 31-year old Hamilton is the top free agent outfielder and is seeking a long-term contract. USA Today reports that the team is unlikely to sign him based on his contract demands.

“I don’t think you can sit around and say ‘We have to wait and see what happens with Josh,'” Rangers owner Nolan Ryan said. “We’ll all get a feel here shortly where we think that might be going, but also we have to be out there seeing what opportunities are out there, whether there’s opportunities to improve the club.”

Since joining the Rangers, Hamilton has been one of the best hitters in all of baseball. In 2012, he hit .285 with 43 home runs and 128 RBIs. Despite his immense talent, Hamilton’s career has been plagued with injures, and more infamously, substance abuse issues.

Prior to the 2008 season, Hamilton was acquired by the Rangers in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitcher Edison Volquez.
