Homeless Veterans Surpass Shelter Housing

  Published at

(POCATELLO) – The number of homeless veterans living in eastern Idaho has surpassed the available number of beds in area shelters.

Local News 8 reports nearly 20 percent of the nation’s homeless people are veterans, and an estimated 60 homeless veterans are living in the region. With only 12 beds available between the Freedom LZ shelter and the Jefferson House, there’s a long list of veterans looking for a warm place to rest.

On Monday night, the American Legion and several other organizations teamed up to provide gifts for area veterans. Organizers say it’s important to recognize the sacrifices of many of the community’s most neglected residents.
