The 27-year-old Trout dominated Cotto over the last two rounds to take control of the fight. Two judges scored the fight 117-111 and the third had it 119-109.

“It was a good fight, Cotto is a great champion,” said Trout. “He’s strong, he doesn’t miss a step, he comes on, he comes back, he comes fast. For me to be able to beat a fighter like a Miguel Cotto is an honor in itself.”

It’s Cotto’s second straight loss. He lost his WBA Super Light Middleweight championship to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May.
