World Rings in 2013: New Year Celebrated Around the Globe
Published at(NEW YORK) — From Japan to Australia, many countries have already rang in 2013.
Tens of thousands of people lined Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong to watch $1.6 million worth of fireworks — reportedly the biggest in the city’s history.
Myanmar, a country ruled for almost five decades by military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings, held a public countdown for the first time. In Yangon, the country’s largest city, about 72,000 people gathered two hours before midnight for the celebration.
In Sydney, Australia, an estimated 1.5 million people gathered at the waterfront to watch the $6.6 million fireworks display that included a show-stopping finale on the iconic Harbour Bridge.
