The decision was announced by 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after practice Thursday.

San Francisco signed kicker Billy Cundiff on Jan. 1 because Akers had struggled this season, only making 29-of-42 field-goal attempts.

Still, Akers has a good track record. In his 15 NFL seasons he has hit 81 percent of his field-goals, and has kicked in six NFC championship games.

“We feel confident in David giving us the best chance to win,” Harbaugh said. “[Cundiff] has none a nice job. David’s done a better job and is more prepared to give us the best chance to win.”

Even with Akers winning the job, Harbaugh says Cundiff will stay on the roster.
